AMAZON: Book Description
Three years after her husband Max's death, Shelley feels no more adjusted to being a widow than she did that first terrible day. That is, until the doorbell rings. Standing on her front step is a young man who looks so much like Max–same smile, same eyes, same age, same adorable bump in his nose–he could be Max's long-lost relation. He introduces himself as Paolo, an Italian editor of American coffee table books, and shows Shelley some childhood photos. Paolo tells her that the man in the photos, the bearded man who Paolo says is his grandfather though he never seems to age, is Max. Her Max. And he is alive and well.
As outrageous as Paolo's claims seem–how could her husband be alive? And if he is, why hasn't he looked her up? – Shelley desperately wants to know the truth. She and Paolo jet across the globe to track Max down–if it is really Max– and along the way, Shelley recounts the European package tour where they had met. As she relives Max's stories of bloody Parisian barricades, medieval Austrian kitchens, and buried Roman boathouses, Shelley begins to piece together the story of who her husband was and what these new revelations mean for her "happily ever after." And as she and Paolo get closer to the truth, Shelley discovers that not all stories end where they are supposed to. From the Hardcover edition. Amazon

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a Great Book!

This is an absolutely incredible book-well written, engaging, thoughtful and compelling. It tells the story of a man whose life is not as it seems, of the woman who loved him and of the grandson who is seeking to find him. All this is tied into the telling of a story within of the lives this man, Max, has lived and of the story those lives really tell.
In the opening chapter is Shelley, widow to Max, meeting a man who claims he is Max’s grandson. Paolo, the grandson, is the age Max was when he died five years prior. From this point, the story of Shelley and Max unfold in the telling of the memories Shelley has of her meeting and falling in love with Max. The stories are of the history of places Max leads people to in his small tour business in Europe. Paolo has heard each one but as a child growing up as Max raised him. Confusion and, finally, understanding come to Shelley and Paolo as they travel to a remote Philippine island in search of Max.
There are colorful tales of Max’s historical past written with a passion to convey Max’s emotions in each. The stories become the ultimate path to Max.

I am amazed that there are any bad reviews for this book. I rarely write a negative review for a book unless it is chock full of grammatical errors, because I know that what may be a horrible book for me might be a great book for someone else - different strokes and all that. I do not like pulpy romance novels, but I do like a well-written love story, which this book has. I like the premise of immortality. I would love to have the egg recipe. I even have more respect for chickens after reading this book. I enjoyed the bits of history and it was somewhat of a travelogue since I enjoyed Shelley's travels vicariously. I liked all the characters, the twists and turns, the surprises. I liked everything about this book. I think to enjoy this book you need a vivid imagination, an open mind and at least a liking for fantasy and science fiction. I imagine that any Doctor Who fan would love this book. If you liked The Time Traveler's Wife, I think you would love this book. If you liked Practical Magic, you should like this book. The comments about it being poorly written and hard to follow surprised me. You do have to keep track of characters and the changes from one time and story to another, but I found the segues easy to follow because the writing flowed so well. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for those whom it is, it will be a delicious read.

A tour de force. A wonderful, thought-provoking story.. Samantha Sotto writes lyrical and vivid descriptions of people and places. With just a few words she can sketch a character or a place. I savored her longer descriptions. Before Ever After deserves six stars on a scale of one to five. It held my interest to the very last word and I give it two thumbs up! Now I'm reading the beginning chapters all over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time travel with a twist.

Well written, entertaining and if you are a fan of the time travel genre... believable. By the last few chapters I felt like I was on a rollercoaster. I'm almost tempted to go back and re-read it. I'm certain there were clues I missed the first time through in my haste to see how it all turned out. For me, re-reading is almost unheard of but this book is worth it.
I will definitely be searching for Ms. Sotto's other work to add to my wish list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!

That would be the word to sum up this book. Beautifully written, exquisitely crafted. Poetry and music on a page. I couldn't put this story down I was so enthralled with Andrea and Isaac and their love that broke through the barrier of time and space.
The characters have depth, are marvelously developed and come to life on the page. The story is a richly woven tapestry of marvelous colors and emotions. Details have been meticulously researched.
I can't find one flaw in this book . . . Except that it ended. I'm so glad I stumbled on this lovely book. It's one that will stay in my memory and my heart for quite some time.
I highly recommend it!

This book was a fantastic read, I couldn't put it down! Stayed up all night to keep reading until I passed out, and then kept reading the rest during breaks at work. I wish a couple things went differently (without giving spoilers), but overall the book was such a pleasure. I already have plans to reread this one. Typically I steer clear of 'if you loved blah blah you'll love this one' type recommendations, cause they tend not to be true and overhype the book. But for this one it's pretty accurate. If you were a fan of Time Traveler's Wife, this will be a good romance to read.
