The Portrait of The Filipina as an International Fiction Author

In 1984, The Benigno Aquino Jr. Foundation sponsored  an essay-writing contest on the theme “What Aug. 21, 1983 means to Me”.
Sam Sotto (born a year after martial law was declared) was deeply touched by Ninoy's heroic act. The 11-year old grade school student  from Benedictine Abbey School-Alabang (now San Beda College-Alabang) decided to submit an entry to the essay-writing contest.
In those dark days of gloom in the country, it was not the easiest thing to do, even for a kid, considering how the Marcos authoritarian regime stifled any kind of news about Ninoy in all media.
Sam Sotto, 11 years old, with our beloved Tita Cory
during the awarding ceremonies.
Fortunately, Sam's piece won in the the English category (grade school level) of the essay writing contest.
Sam Sotto is now an international author and mother of two kids.
Samantha's first book, Before Ever After, became an international best-selling novel! It is now available in English and Polish editions.
From Library Journal
This is the story of an impossible affair between present-day San Francisco cello prodigy Andrea Louviere and a young Isaac Newton. More than a romance, this tale is an enigma and a conundrum. Andrea’s childhood playing magically opens up a crack in space and time.
The crack quickly closes but not before she meets Isaac on the other side. As this phenomenon repeats itself over the years, Andrea—now a young woman—begins to receive written messages from Isaac, delivered in the present. When she gets a note from her future self, things really get interesting. With the help of her erstwhile present-day boyfriend Nate, Andrea is able to understand the logic behind the doorway to the past. She boldly steps through the doorway, and her romance with Isaac is truly ignited.
The novel describes a Möbius strip of interrelated actions that circle back upon themselves in space and time. Sotto’s (Before Ever After) remarkable story keeps the reader guessing until the very end.
Verdict : The imaginative blend of romance, history, and paranormal is compulsively readable, hits all the romantic high notes, and provides a novel explanation for the development of calculus; highly recommended.—Henry Bankhead, San Rafael P.L., CA

This is an absolutely incredible book-well written, engaging, thoughtful and compelling. It tells the story of a man whose life is not as it seems, of the woman who loved him and of the grandson who is seeking to find him. All this is tied into the telling of a story within of the lives this man, Max, has lived and of the story those lives really tell.
In the opening chapter is Shelley, widow to Max, meeting a man who claims he is Max’s grandson. Paolo, the grandson, is the age Max was when he died five years prior. From this point, the story of Shelley and Max unfold in the telling of the memories Shelley has of her meeting and falling in love with Max. The stories are of the history of places Max leads people to in his small tour business in Europe. Paolo has heard each one but as a child growing up as Max raised him. Confusion and, finally, understanding come to Shelley and Paolo as they travel to a remote Philippine island in search of Max.
There are colorful tales of Max’s historical past written with a passion to convey Max’s emotions in each. The stories become the ultimate path to Max.
Sam Sotto released a new novel "Love and Gravity" in February 2017.  The Turkish edition of "Love and Gravity was released in September.

I am a huge fan of novels featuring time travel, but I'm picky when it comes to how its done! This one was a definite winner! Loved it. I was sold on it when I saw the comp title used was The Time Traveler's Wife. This book did not disappoint! Sotto did a wonderful job of creating characters that were tangible, a plot that tugged on heartstrings, and a storyline that kept me intrigued.

That would be the word to sum up this book. Beautifully written, exquisitely crafted. Poetry and music on a page. I couldn't put this story down I was so enthralled with Andrea and Isaac and their love that broke through the barrier of time and space.
The characters have depth, are marvelously developed and come to life on the page. The story is a richly woven tapestry of marvelous colors and emotions. Details have been meticulously researched.
I can't find one flaw in this book . . . Except that it ended. I'm so glad I stumbled on this lovely book. It's one that will stay in my memory and my heart for quite some time.
I highly, highly recommend.
