Reflections

“How shall freedom be defended? By arms when it is attacked by arms, by truth when it is attacked by lies, by faith when it is attacked by authoritarian dogma. Always, in the final act, by determination and faith.”

Leni versus Bongbong: A Brave Widow vs. Marcos Part II

Reluctant Candidate Versus Dictator's Son
“Ver, Marcos and the rest of the official family plunged the country into two decades of lies, torture, and plunder.

LIBERAL Party (LP) vice presidential candidate Leni Robredo has a message for “millennials” who believe the martial law years were the country’s golden age: It was an ugly time.
“Everything the country experienced back then truly happened. It was not a myth, it was not just a fabrication,” Robredo said on the sidelines of the 30th anniversary celebration of the Edsa revolution at the People Power Monument on Thursday.
Robredo said she was saddened by postings on Facebook and Twitter, especially by young people, characterizing the Marcos dictatorship from 1972 to 1986 as the best years of the Philippines.
“When I go on social media, I see a lot of comments that are not true,” said the Camarines Sur representative and widow of Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo.
“Many mistakenly believe that what we went through more than 30 years ago were the best years in our history.”
Robredo has called out her rival for the vice presidency, Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., for his revisionist statements about his father’s regime.
Filipinos, she said, should be truthful about what really happened during those years that were marked by abuses against political dissenters, thousands of whom were detained, tortured and killed.
“If there were mistakes, we need to accept them so they do not happen again,” she said.
Marcos, son and namesake of the dictator, has repeatedly said he has nothing to apologize for and the country would have progressed had his father not been deposed.
Robredo said that acknowledging the dark past would lead to a change in society.
The congresswoman, who was eight years old when martial law was declared in 1972, said she had her “political awakening” during the years of the dictatorship, especially after Ninoy Aquino’s assassination.
“After Ninoy died, I became very active [in protests] at the University of the Philippines,” she said. Later she took up law and worked as a human rights lawyer. From Inquirer

MANILA - If Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr wins the vice-presidential race in 2016, the Philippines will become the laughingstock of the world, a fellow senator said Thursday.
Sen. Sergio Osmena III, grandson of the late Commonwealth President Sergio Osmena, was incarcerated for five years during the martial rule of Marcos' father, the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos. He escaped from a maximum security prison cell in Fort Bonifacio in 1977, along with ABS-CBN's Eugenio Lopez Jr.
In an interview on ANC's Headstart, Osmena said he is reminded of the late Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's description of the Marcos family in his book "From Third World to First."
"He begins his part on the Philippines this way. 'Now the Philippines is a completely different story. Nowhere in the world do you see the family of a dictator being allowed back into the country and running for public office.' Even Lee Kuan Yew couldn't understand it, so somebody as dumb as me can't understand it either," he said.
Asked what would be the effect of a Marcos being elected vice-president, Osmena said: "We will be the laughingstock of the world. I think so."
The eldest sister of President Benigno Aquino III has endorsed the candidacy of Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo, dispelling rumors that the vice presidential bet will be dropped by the Liberal Party (LP).
In an interview at the Leni Robredo Tsinelas Volunteer Center Thursday, Maria Elena "Ballsy" Aquino-Cruz said she is confident that Robredo can win the vice presidential race despite her poor showing in pre-election surveys.
"Oo, I'm very confident. Sabi niya, 'Just have faith and there will be a miracle,'" Ballsy said. From ABS-CBN News
"In my mind, ano kayang miracle?
"Ma, Follow Your Heart" Jesse
Leni Robredo
