Reflections

“How shall freedom be defended? By arms when it is attacked by arms, by truth when it is attacked by lies, by faith when it is attacked by authoritarian dogma. Always, in the final act, by determination and faith.”

David Bryne of "Here Lies Love": Include more juicy tidbits of Imelda Marcos' colorful life!

The most beautiful, the greediest and funniest
former first lady of the Philippines!
Imelda Marcos:"You could die laughing!"
“Here Lies Love,” based on a 2010 song collection that Mr. Byrne produced with the British musician Fatboy Slim, cheerily plays down the Marcoses’ corruption and cruelty. Instead, Mr. Byrne’s libretto keeps the focus on Imelda’s rags-to-riches story. Mr. Byrne has said he wants his audience to “reluctantly empathize” with Imelda, who, after listening to a CD of songs portraying her rise from a poor provincial beauty to first lady, told reporters she was “flattered.” The one song that explicitly addresses the infamous “Order 1081” that proclaimed martial law even seems to celebrate it: “Now it’s safe to walk the streets at night — a new world has begun. Ev’rybody’s sleeping soundly — thanks to 1081.”

NEW YORK — David Byrne has gone more than an extra mile to ensure his immersive show “Here Lies Love” about Filipino ex-first lady Imelda Marcos is as authentic as possible as it goes international: He’s just finished casting in Manila.
The Talking Heads frontman went to the Philippines over the July Fourth holiday to add potential names to the Britain-based talent pool as he gears up to open the show in London this September at the Dorfman Theatre.
Mothering PowerPoint
From The Honolulu Advertiser
She orders one of her men in black to get the documentaries of her visit to China, "when millions lined the streets," and the one called "The Conquest of Iraq by Imelda Marcos." She also reminds him of the "Mothering PowerPoint presentation."
Using a laser pointer in the shape of a small revolver, Marcos says the foreword of "Mothering" was written by Igor R. Shafarevich, whom she calls the "greatest mathematician" of the 20th century. She says that he calls her thinking "mathematically perfect.
"I can articulate my life in 1 and 0 and infinity. Mothering is infinity, as the Lord said: `Call my mother blessed because she is the instrument of the humanity."'
"The seven pillars to moral regeneration."
"The seven pillars to moral regeneration," Marcos says. "Ecological order. If you have one tree and a child grows another, it brings it to infinity. Human order. If you have male and female, you have man and woman toward infinity. Economic order. Money was made to go in circles for people and not for people to go in circles for money. Man is in the center, and money goes around man so that it will flourish. Then it becomes a flower and is beautiful and has seeds. And the seed is another seedling and forever, and infinity." Imelda
"There are many gods, but only one creator," she says. "Computer 0101 bite, cosmos 0101 bite, then Adam and Eve 01, see, then the creator 1 and 0 is apple. Isn't that nice?" Imelda (a.k.a. Maganda)
When Bathala (God) was done creating the world, he was bored. He looked down over the earth and sent a bird into the world. The bird was flying around when it heard some sounds and tapping somewhere in the forest. The bird landed and found out that the sound was coming from a huge bamboo. He started pecking on it and pretty soon it split in the middle where a man (who look like Marcos) came out of it. His name was Malakas, which means strong, and he told the bird, "My future mate (Imelda) is in the other piece of wood." They got her out and her name was Maganda which means beautiful. “Do you think of yourselves as Gods?”
To which Imelda’s immediate reply was:
“Yes, because we are on a divine mission to return to the Philippines and reclaim our destiny.”
The ex President then chipped in:
“We are part of the achievement of being a God. That is what we are about now. An ordinary mortal would not be able to stand it. All of our statements now have to prove that we have not gone back to being ordinary mortals.”
“Everything I have is theirs.I am their star and their slave. No matter how poor they are, whenever they see me they smile and they are happy!”
Imelda’s extravagance knew no bounds. She grabbed everything, bought everything, hoarded everything. Her excuse was that she was doing it for her “little people”. Like the “meek” in the Bible, she assured us, they would inherit it all.
"Fidel Castro has said in his whole life, he has only driven for two people: his mother and Imelda Marcos." Imelda
From NYT:
She consorted with Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi and Fidel Castro.
Her legendary shopping sprees ultimately included the assembly of a splendid portfolio of secretly acquired American real estate, featuring such jewels as the Crown Building on Fifth Avenue and a Long Island estate that is once again on the market. State Department sources have told me that Imelda may even have planned the brazen 1983 murder of the opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino, shot down on the Manila airport tarmac in front of a planeload of foreign journalists. It’s no wonder witnesses reported hearing Mr. Marcos turn to his wife, while awaiting the American helicopters that whisked them away from their palace, and growl, “It’s all your fault.”
“I don’t believe in the death sentence. Saddam was a friend of the Philippines. He was the first leader in the Arab world who welcomed Philippine labor…. When I was on trial, he sent his people to me in New York. If there was anything he could do for me, he was ready to help.” Imeldific
"Did Imelda and Gaddafi Share
The  Same Pair of Shoes in Tripoli?"
"I understand what Gaddafi is going through. He is fighting for honor. He is fighting for justice. I could not blame him, because I have been fighting too... [through] so much pain and persecution to uphold truth and honour." Imeldific
Chairman  Mao flirting With Imelda?
“Look at this photo. It says, ‘Mao flirting with Imelda Marcos,’” Imelda says, pointing to a photo of Mao kissing her hand.
"The same was true of Panama's Manuel Noriega. When we were forced into exile in 1986, he was the one who was about to give us a place for asylum. Some time ago, he sent me his book and a letter. I was so touched because I could not do anything to help him.” Imeldific
Manuel Antonio Noriega Moreno is a former Panamanian politician and soldier. He was military dictator of Panama from 1983 to 1989.
