"Before Ever After" Novel : International Best Seller By A Pinay Author

Barnes And Noble Best-Selling Romance Novel

 AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEWS
Refreshing and enjoyable read
This review is from: Before Ever After: A Novel (Hardcover)
*Disclaimers: spoilers at bay.

I was amused on how Sam stuck to the entire theme of the story, which I think delved on the "journey". More than how Max became immortal, etc., I thought how each detail was strung together to develop the journey of Max and Shelley beautifully. Though I was thirsting more about the details regarding Max's immortality, I also thought how it was more important to expound on his journey after he became immortal and midway, he came to know and love a certain Shelley who took her own journey in confronting Max's immortality. I admit, I enjoyed the story 10000x better than The Time Traveller's Wife (which I think was one of Sam's inspirations for her story). I maybe a sucker for happy endings but more than this, I appreciate how the story conveys the importance of living in the "now" and how we sojourned rather than where we will end.

Other than that, I appreciate how the settings of each place were woven together to develop the story and characters. I remember Elizabeth Kostova who also has a knack of using vivid descriptions of places, etc. The difference with Sam and her is that in the former's story, the description of the places did not go overboard. It was not as superfluous as Kostova did it in her two books "The Historian" and "The Swan Thieves". With Sam, it was just right. Just the right amount of salt and pepper to allow the reader to use her own imagination in seeing the places each character has seen.

On the downside, I got more curious about Mihael. Somehow I wonder how he himself became immortal. For a while, I thought he was Max's maker haha. Thinking in hindsight, there was quite a missing link between the vial, him, and his "reconciliation" with Max. How did Shelley ended up with another vial anyway when Max supposedly gave it back to Marija as a "donation"? Mihael seems brooding and quite mystique. But that is his allure and surely, I wanted that more developed. =) I also felt sorry for Paolo. His exit was quite swift. Nevertheless, this is about Max and Shelley so I thought it was very forgivable.

All of these said, I would like to say that I enjoyed Sam's book very much. When I started to read the book, I got giddy and excited over how Max and Shelley fell in love and how Sam played the "elephant in the room" scene as well as the "black and yellow blur". Thus I coined my opinion as "I love the book...so far" but after finishing the story, it's not anymore of "I love the book..so far" but rather, I love it. Period. Sam's writing style and the way she told the story was truly refreshing, to say the least. It was unconventional, as other critiques have said, which gives it is exceptional appeal. For me, it was like Sam was right in front of me and telling me the story herself. It had that personal and chummy vibe. =)

That said, I honestly admit that I am looking forward to Sam's next project. I hope it is as refreshing as "Before Ever After". =)
5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Journey
This review is from: Before Ever After: A Novel (Hardcover)
Max used to be a tour guide, but not an ordinary tour guide. He led his `campers' to unusual spots around Europe not to appreciate the sights or the food, but the history and the lives of those who once inhabited the land, walked on those fields, swam in those waters. And that's when Shelley fell in love with him, while he led her through time and attempted to teach her, and the other campers, the value of a chicken and some eggs.

Years later, Shelley is Max's widow, but one can't say she's actually alive. She survives in a daily struggle to breathe and keep a parody of the life she shared with him. Everything, however, is about to change.

There's someone at the door. She opens it.

And there is Max.

For the split of a moment, she believes herself insane. She's a prisoner of her own hallucinating mind.

But, no, that cannot be. That's not Max. That's Paolo Rossi. Max's grandson.

How can that be possible? Max wasn't more than a couple years older than herself.

Paolo brings photographs showing a greying Max, whose face never seemed to gain those unavoidable lines time gifts everyone with. That's just a detail, though. More importantly, Max may be alive. There is another photograph and there is Max, standing by his famous eggs and cheese, the blank piece of Scrabble she had given him hanging from a chain around his neck.

But why would he lie to her? Why would he make her believe he's gone?

It's time for Shelley to face reality, and a journey towards truth has never taken so long. Literally.

It's a journey which is also hard to describe, it provokes feelings words cannot express. More than a timeless romantic tale, Samantha Sotto created many lives within two, many stories within one. The settings are very vividly depicted, both with awe and appeal, not leaving room for tediousness born out of long and meaningless sentences.

The plot has a quality of rare originality - so I'll stop talking about it right now, or I'll spoil it. It suffices to say that it starts unpretentiously, but then it gets the reader back and forth in time. One minute you are travelling with Max, Shelley and the campers throughout Europe, but when you least expect it, you are immersed in the Fall of the Bastille or in a monastery somewhere. For every story Max shares, there is a different storyteller's voice in the reader's mind, and a distinguished set of characters who shine on their own and for different reasons.

Pavel and his wish to never cause pain to his mother.

Gestrin and his fear of loneliness.

Uri and his grief.

And so many others. There is a connection between these many historical figures and Shelley, a connection which, eventually, changes her life in such a way that there is no turning back.

And how does Max fit into this?

Forgive the cliché, but that is for me to know and for you to find out!

Max is a wonderfully developed character, though. He's got a very philosophical attitude towards life and how to make the best of it, a sense of humour to give the Weasley twins a run for their galleons and something else, something uniquely his, that makes him special, lovable, sensitive.

The story is beautifully brought to a close. It is simultaneously predictable and unimaginable, happy and sad, bitter and sweet.

An authentic story and a talented debut writer can only make a highly recommended book.

I loved it!

"Before Ever After" has it all. The background settings are breathtaking. The story is full of mystery, romance, adventure, humor, and philosophy.all of my favorite things. The characters are real and very human. The ever twisting plot makes it impossible to put down. Shelley lost her husband, Max, abruptly, blown up by a bomb while she was on the phone with him. Three years later, Paolo knocks on her door, claiming to be her thirty-two year old husband's thirty-two year old grandson. Could Max possibly still be alive? She hastily boards a plane to the Philippines with Paolo, for the most important journey of her life. During their trip, Shelley tells Paolo the story of how she and Max met and her experience with him as a tour guide. Okay.maybe a little far out.but I loved it.

Highly Recommend!

I was completely captivated by Samantha Sotto's novel, Before Ever After. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but when I sat down to read it, it was difficult to tear myself away. I liked the character of Shelley a lot. I'm sure it's difficult to lose a spouse and I felt her journey back from the unexpectedness of Max's death was going realistically. Meeting a man named Paolo puts a wrench in her grieving process. The story moves back and forth in time, especially to the European tour Shelley took around the Continent "off the beaten track" where she first met her husband Max. The historical stories of a woman named Isabelle and her ancestors were very compelling and touched on many areas of history. I think the twists in the story would make it great for book club discussions.

Gloria Arroyo,Erap And Marcos Inducted In Presidential Hall Of Shame!

From BBC
Former Philippine President Gloria Arroyo has been arrested on charges of election fraud.
Mrs Arroyo was arrested on her hospital bed in the capital Manila, accused of cheating to win a seat in the Senate for one of her supporters during the 2007 election.
Mrs Arroyo has been fighting a legal battle to be allowed to leave the country to receive medical treatment.
She denies any wrongdoing and her lawyer says the charges are fabricated.
Ferdinand Topacio said the government had filed charges with "indecent haste" in what he called an "emerging pattern of persecution".
A Philippine court had issued an arrest warrant after the Election Commission filed charges against her.
'Truth to prevail' For months, speculation has swirled that Mrs Arroyo was about to be charged - either with vote fraud or with embezzlement.
With the threat of charges hanging over her, the government put her on a watch-list of people who have to ask for permission to leave the country.
She launched a legal bid arguing that the travel ban infringed her constitutional right to be regarded as innocent until proven guilty.
Twice this week the Supreme Court, which is dominated by her appointees, has ruled in her favour.

At one stage she even travelled to the airport, where she was photographed in a wheelchair with a neck-brace. She says she has a rare bone disease and needs specialist treatment.
But twice the government has foiled her attempts to leave the country.
On Friday, the lower court's decision to issue an arrest warrant appears to have brought the first phase of the saga to an end.
Court officials insisted she could not leave the country now that the warrant had been issued.
"Hospital arrest is possible. The arresting officers will look at her health if that is needed," said court official Joel Pelicano.
Election officials said Mrs Arroyo, who was president between 2001 and 2010, had ordered large-scale tampering with official returns in the 2007 Senate elections that cheated an opposition candidate out of victory.
The maximum sentence is life in prison.
"It is our desire that truth and accountability prevail and that the Filipino people be given the justice they truly deserve," said Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.

Gloria Arroyo,Erap And Marcos Inducted In Presidential Hall Of Shame!

Analysis

When quiet, studious Gloria Arroyo became the Philippine president in 2001, she was hailed as the perfect antidote to her loud, hard-drinking predecessor Joseph Estrada.
But over her nine-year term, her popularity plummeted as she faced a series of allegations of vote-rigging and corruption.
When Benigno Aquino replaced her as president in June 2010, he made it clear that one of his main priorities was to investigate Mrs Arroyo's administration. And in recent weeks he's been saying openly that he expects her to face charges.
So in the government's eyes, it all looked a bit convenient when she said she wanted to leave the Philippines for foreign medical treatment - especially as her itinerary included locations which do not have an extradition treaty with Manila.
That's why she was banned from leaving - a ban subsequently overturned by the Supreme Court. But now she's been charged, it looks like President Aquino has got his way and she's not going out of the country any time soon.

At one stage she even travelled to the airport, where she was photographed in a wheelchair with a neck-brace. She says she has a rare bone disease and needs specialist treatment.

Politics in the Philippines is notorious for corruption, vote-rigging and long-running bitter rivalries between clans and families.
Mrs Arroyo, herself the daughter of a former president, has been surrounded by corruption allegations for years, and survived several attempts to have her impeached while in office.
Her predecessor Joseph Estrada was jailed for corruption, and former authoritarian leader Ferdinand Marcos amassed a vast fortune by embezzling public money.

"Before Ever After" Novel by Samantha Sotto:In The News

Barnes & Noble :Best-Selling Romance Books (As Of November 14, 2011)
Who should play Shelley and Max?

AMAZON Reviews:

4.0 out of 5 stars "Nothing came without a price.", November 12, 2011

This review is from: Before Ever After: A Novel (Hardcover)
"Before Ever After," by Samantha Sotto, is a poignant work of fantasy, romance, and historical fiction. Shelley Sullivan flees Ohio and her grieving mother and heads to London, where she takes a job in advertising. She has decided against marrying, since if she refuses to make a commitment, she will not risk the bitterness of loss. Her plans go out the window when the twenty-four year old Shelley meets the hunky Max Gallus, who runs an unusual package tour in Europe. Max is charming, gorgeous, intelligent, and obviously attracted to Shelley. Although the chemistry between the two is palpable, Shelley fears that falling in love with Max will ultimately lead to sorrow.

As it turns out, Shelley is not completely wrong about the potential for heartbreak. Unbeknownst to her, Max is hiding some important information about his past that, if revealed, would make him a poor candidate for matrimony. Suffice it to say that Max is not the person he appears to be and in the course of the narrative, we go back in time from 1871 to 79 A. D. and learn a great deal more about our hero's unusual history.

The book's premise is intriguing and the author injects liberal doses of humor to offset the sometimes somber subject matter. Some readers may be put off by the confusing plot, numerous (and at times tedious) flashbacks, and ambiguous ending. Nevertheless, Shelley and Max are an appealing couple whom we grow to like, Max's story is weirdly fascinating, and the author's message about the wisdom of living in the moment is certainly one that anyone can take to heart. Sotto's decision to write such an unconventional debut novel is courageous and ambitious, and although "Before Ever After" is not an unqualified success, it is a commendable first effort.

I really loved the "experience" of reading this book. It's a modern day story that unfolds through a series of incredibly well-written short stories told by the two main characters in hopes of helping each other understand what happened to someone they both love. I agree with reviewer Terry who says the ending is a bit frustrating. Overall, though, I loved it and can't wait to follow the career of this new author.

I passed this book along to a friend after receiving it, being involved in another book at the time. When she returned it to me, it was with the suggestion I "don't bother reading it at all." Obviously she hadn't enjoyed it, but her suggestion was all I needed to see for myself. I enjoyed "Before Ever After." Part love story, part tale of immortality, part history lesson, The relationship between Shelly and Max is told in, at first, slightly confusing time frames, time frames which include Max' stories, each one further back in time, each one an enticing look back into, the reader comes to realize, just who Max is and was. It's her time with the Slight Detour Company that introduces Shelly to Max, the man with whom she will find love and lose love. Once again, too much can be told in a review. If you spend the time with Samantha Sotto's first novel, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Help other customers find
4.0 out of 5 stars TRAVELING ACROSS THE CENTURIES, October 8, 2011

This review is from: Before Ever After: A Novel (Hardcover)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Before Ever After is the type of book defies genre. It is part romance novel, part historical fiction, part travelogue, part supernatural fantasy, part fairy tale and part history lesson. Does that feel like a lot to pack into one book? Well it is! Before Ever After asks its readers to abandon logic and accept the veracity of this tale that whisks you away to other times and other worlds as seen through the eyes of one man, Max, and related by his widow, Shelley. I will not go into the intricacies of the hows and whys of their story or the lives of the other characters who flesh out the tale, instead I will merely give you my personal impressions.

Although the back story of Max and Shelley's romance, his subsequent death and her amazing discoveries about the man who was her husband, is the foundation on which the story is constructed I found the historical details most interesting. I had never thought about how the canals of Venice were constructed but learned that they was built on wood pilings most of which came from the alder forests of Slovenia and Croatia. The wood petrified as a result of the constant flow of mineral-rich water around and through it, so that it becomes a stone-like structure on which the Venetians built their city. Who knew!). Many of Max's adventures through the centuries actually sent me to my computer to research the "factual" data about Medieval Vienna, Revolutionary Paris, the volcanic destruction of Herculaneum and other historic events.

History aside, the most pressing question presented by this book seems to be that of immortality. What is it? Is it actually living forever (ala all those Twilight vampire tales) and if you could would you really CHOOSE to LIVE FOREVER? OR.....is living forever just the sum total of the contributions each and every one of us have made while we were living that ultimately become immortalized in the memories of those we love and in whose lives we have made a difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant debut! Be prepared to fall in love, cry, hope, enjoy a beautiful history and be thrilled to turn each page., October 4, 2011

This review is from: Before Ever After: A Novel (Hardcover)
When love leaves you suddenly and tragically, do you ever pick up the pieces of your life and try again? It's been three years since Max's death and Shelly still longs for his warmth and kindness, not to mention his excellently delicious baked eggs. After the arrival of a photo book containing the moments before and after the loss of her love another delivery comes in the form of a man who looks nearly identical to the man she still yearns for. Paolo claims that Max is not only his grandfather, but that he is still alive. What follows is a journey into the past and a hope that magic & "happily ever afters" may just be real after all.

How do you put into words a book that had you so completely consumed you could hardly think of doing anything else but read it? Before Ever After will forever be a book that every other will stand against. Within it's pages held a range of emotions I rarely find reading, from longing and despair to unfaltering love and adventure to a journey into what it is to be human. Samantha Sotto's debut novel was clearly something I didn't expect to fall so deeply in love with, but her characters came to life and I couldn't help but hope for their happily ever after.

Now without gushing too much I'll attempt to mention a few of the aspects of the story that had me drawn in from the very first few pages and didn't let go even after I closed the book. Sotto's main characters Shelly and Max were an eternal Romeo and Juliet, bound together by a string of magical realism that made the story sparkle like the disco ball in Max's VW van. I'm such a huge fan of magical realism, especially when used in women's fiction because it adds another level of hope and anticipation I rarely find elsewhere. The idea that Shelly's recently deceased husband Max is still alive after a tragic accident became more and more "believable" as the story continued. As Shelly recounts the way her and Max met & fell in love you also have the opportunity of hearing about a past that never seemed like more than great history lessons to her. In that way, I loved how the story was weaved together and have a feeling that even readers out there who don't typically enjoy historical aspects in a story will absolutely fall in love with Before Ever After.

In addition to Shelly and Max's characters I also especially loved Simon & Brad as well as Dex's story. Each character played a part in Shelly's discoveries, including of course, Paolo. I also must say that since finishing this wonderful novel I crave eggs nearly non-stop and will be looking up recipes for baked eggs until I'm able to have the perfect Sunday morning breakfast. Yes, food and magical realism all in one book, how could anyone not love this?

Before Ever After is a tale of beginning your happily ever after at the end. To understand that fully I'd beg you to read Samantha Sotto's debut novel. Be prepared to fall in love, cry, hope, enjoy a beautiful history and be thrilled to turn each page in this marvelously told love story. I will undoubtedly be recommending this novel to everyone I know and especially those fans of authors like Cecelia Ahern, Sarah Addison Allen and Adena Halpern. This magical debut will no doubt be one I long compare others against and will no doubt read again. Samantha Sotto is an author to expect magnificent things from and I for one am eagerly awaiting any & all novels she writes from this point forward.
